Short Review: Gemini Rights - Steve Lacy
RCA signee Steve Lacy drops his sophomore LP
A mix of perfectly crafted melodies and production with purposefully unrefined vocals and down-to-earth, meta writing channeled through some dynamic delivery, Steve Lacy hits the right spot to serve us a delightful treat.
He is singing about lost love and unsustainable relationships, for example warning his ex on 'Static', although probably with selfish reasons, or freeing himself on 'Helmet' after years of having to shield his heart. The two standouts on this project however are 'Cody Freestyle', where Steve hops coolly on this grand bass heavy beat firing out relatable line after relatable line, it's a song which wouldn't look lost on the DONDA track list (subject-matter aside), and 'Bad Habit', a warm rock track that eventually morphs into an interesting acoustic hip-hop blend. Already with a swathe of writing credits on the earlier tracks, Fousheé is one of two featured acts on this album and acts as a much-welcomed opposition to Steve's previously unquestioned toxic tendencies.
Gemini Rights is a light listen and flies by in a breeze, never overstaying its welcome, and once it ends, you might find yourself longing to hear Steve Lacy be full of regret and malice once again.
